It's not a common habit, but it does require some close inspection of the area your dog has chewed. The nail may have split and perhaps an infection had started. If your dog spends a lot of time outside, the nail may have caught on something and been partially torn. These dogs are pretty stoic when they experience pain. They do not express it.
Check carefully for heat, swelling, pussy discharge or nail fragments. Any of these mean a quick trip to the vet. Do not wait. Blood poisoning could end your dog's life.
