Pyrenees Mood

by Lori

We adopted a Pyrenees about 8 months ago and love her very much. She is a great dog though stubborn at times. I'm not used to a dog that is so mellow and laid back. Sometimes I feel she is depressed. I've read that they have mellow personalities but I still can't stop feeling she is sad. No matter what she is walked twice a day goes to dog parks and we have a one year old Newfoundland and they love each other and play. Do you have any advice for me to feel comfortable with her moods.

This is standard behaviour for a Pyr. Do not fret.

Does she also have a well-fenced yard in which to hang because they love to be outside? They were bred to be outside and working.

They are happiest watching over their home on the outside. They love to dig holes in the garden to stay cool in summer so you need to set some space aside.

You can read more about their behaviours here, Lori.

It was really after a year of adopting Russell that he seemed happy to be here. Who knows what is background was? I can't say he finally let is "guard" dog down but he's much more appreciative of his new home than before. Be patient. I do find that summer weather make him more inactive and winter kind of revs him up. Perhaps the fur makes him feel inactive. But he's a joy to own despite many quirks.

He likes routine very much. Food isn't a priority or treats or toys but he friendly and is in training to be a therapy dog. If I can only get him to stop crossing in front of me when I walk....
Good luck.

Our Solemn Girl...
by: Jules

We just adopted a rescued Great Pyr gal five days ago (is it only five days!?) - already can't imagine this home without her!

She is 3 years old and also seems very solemn at times, will stand and just look at us. She seems really sensitive to any negative tone of voice, so we treat her with patience and gentleness as we all learn about each other. Lots of cuddling, hugs, brushing, and love. Oh, and walking. Lots and lots of walking. ;)

I'll be referring back to this site a LOT to help educate myself as to just who our wonderful new friend is, inside and out.
