Coat Loss

My 1.5 year old Great Pyrenees is losing hair on his back and front legs, at the top where the legs meet the rump and chest. I have only had him two months, so I'm not sure what's normal. Its like his top coat is falling out and wiry hair is left behind. Is this normal shedding? He also just finished antibiotics for Campylobacter and spring just started here in Alberta too.

Coat Loss
by: Donna

Pyrs molt twice a year – spring and fall – and all year round. When a Pyr truly blows a coat, they lose their undercoat, and will pretty much only have guard hairs left, which will make their coat look extremely thin, almost look unhealthy, like a mange problem. From what you are saying, your dog is losing his outer coat and keeping his undercoat which is not normal. The coat does look thin on the shoulder.

If you think there might be a problem, have the balding spots checked.

Perhaps the antibiotics don't help.

Here is information on the double coat:

antibiotics

they would do it. They take a toll on their immune system. Make sure to feed a raw diet. That will do wonders for your dog's immune system.

Dogs Naturally has great ideas for natural antibiotics. They also talk about the damage that antibiotics do.
