7.5-year-old female Great Pyrenees
From her owner:
This is one of the hardest posts I’ve ever had to write.
After a major life change and divorce 1.5 years ago, my beautiful 7.5 year old female Great Pyrenees has struggled to adapt from country-style living to a high-density townhouse environment. I have tried everything I can think of to help her succeed here, but at the end of the day, she is doing exactly what she was bred to do: guard her people and her perimeter.
She is an incredible dog with the gentlest heart. She is wonderful with children, babies, cats, bunnies, and livestock. She has never been aggressive and truly loves being part of a family. She bonds deeply with her people and is happiest when she has constant companionship and space to patrol.
That said, she is absolutely a Pyrenees through and through. She barks frequently and takes her guarding responsibilities very seriously. In a rural setting, this would be an asset. In a townhouse with close neighbours, it has become unfair to both her and the people around us.
She needs:
• A rural or low-density home with a large securely-fenced area of at least 5 feet with real grass
• Experienced large-breed or livestock guardian owners
• Space to roam safely
• People who understand Pyrenees temperament and barking behaviour
• A home where she is not left alone for long periods
• Someone who is committed to grooming regularly; these dogs required a well-maintained coat to stay warm in winter and cool in summer; do not shave
I want to ensure she goes to a knowledgeable, committed home. This is not a first-time dog-owner breed.
Please do not judge this decision lightly. I love this dog immensely, and this choice is being made entirely for her well-being and happiness.
We recommend the online teaching program Recallers or Home School the Dog, which is a modified version of Recallers, to gain an incredible connection with your dog to set him up for success. The Trust Technique is also an excellent way to gain a wonderful connection with your dog when helping him/her with any fear/anxiety issues.
