Coat - Smells

by Sue
(Wv)

Ours is an outdoor dog. She gets in creek water often and rolls in fields. Her coat smells bad. What can I do besides bathe her everyday?

Your dog's coat shouldn't be smelly. The double layers of fur are probably never truly dry from her bathing in the creek. Wild water isn't clean. It's full of all kinds of bacteria and pathogens that will have infected her skin. The infections are causing the smell. Grass seeds embedded into the mix are an extreme irritant, on top of all that other skin stuff. She is most likely extremely itchy and in quite a bit of pain.
Your dog needs to be seen by a vet asap and a groomer for starters. Depending on the severity of her condition, she may heal (and smell sweet thereafter) but good and consistent coat care for her is in your future, for sure. The vet will give her meds and a special shampoo. Once she feels better a good groomer can help you bring her fur back to the beautiful coat it should be.
Even outdoor Pyrs need to be groomed diligently, every day. Keep her out of the pond, from now on.
Good luck.
