Dew Claws - Three

My male has 3 dew claws on his hind feet. Why? Will the extra see claw need removing for showing?

Show quality

If your going to try to show in a confirmation class, I am afraid that is a serious fault and will hurt his chances, and possibly be a disqualification.

I don't think it could be repaired clean enough to get pass the judges. I have seen the pre-qualifying inspections. Very tough. I know that unlike other dogs, Pyrenees dew claws are part of the bone and should never be removed. However there are many other ways to show and compete. Good luck!

My Pyr breeder told me that when they were stabilizing breed standards after WWII, two dewclaws was determined to be breed standard. Pups born with more were killed. Stupid rule! My boy has a mini claw pop out of one of his extra dewclaws, so I suppose he would not be good for shows either. But he is magnificent on our farm!

There are multiple functions for the dewclaws. See Dogs Naturally, the link below.
