DEW CLAWS

by JANIE STEPIEN
(OREGON, USA)

I bought a Pyrenees from a well-known breeder in California (breeder of the pyrs in "Santa paws" movies) and my little female pyr has only one set of dew claws on her right foot and none on her left.......when I ask the sweet breeder lady if this was normal she said that her male dog (Santa paws in the movie) often "throws" puppies that only have one set of dew claws on rear foot and my pup still is a pyr.....is it normal to have a pyr pup with only one set of dew claws on only one rear foot? Thanks for the info.

dew claws

It may happen to have one in a litter. Only mother nature does what she does with genes. It is not a usual thing. It should not happen on a regular basis.

regarding answers to my questions
by: Janie Stepien

My Pyr looks like a Pyr like ones I see on this website......she's just smaller than my last Pyr, right now, but the wonderful breeder said she will fill out at around 2 years old like her mother did. I believe this breeder because she is well-known and she is a very nice lady. I believe she breeds her females and male very well. I have no cause to not believe her; but I was questioning because I was wondering if this has happened to anyone else out there who might have acquired a Pyr......I don't really mind if my beautiful Pyr has a left hind dew claws or not; she really is a sweetheart, very loving, energetic, and yes, everything a Pyr should be "strong-willed, protector of property/guardian/barker at strange sights and sounds; she's quite different than my first laid back Pyr!!! But I'm thankful she is healthy/sweet/lovable/loving and came from a reputable breeder. If anyone else has stories of their Pyrs with only 1 hind dewclaw on one foot please share:) Thanks. Oh, and I would recommend this breeder to anyone, she has beautiful, sociable, wonderful dogs and pups!! Peace, Janie

single dews
by: Kim

My Pyr is purebred, I met both of his parents. He has only single dews on his hindlegs. He was part of a litter of 8 and he and one other male pup had only singles. I don't care as I am not going to show or breed him, but it is nice to know that someone else has this same trait in their dog.

dew claws
by: Janie

i know/seen both parents of my beautiful Pyr, they both are pure-bred; i sort of wanted my pyr to have dewclaws on both hind feet, since with my first pyr i removed them because of getting caught on things on our prop; so with this Pyr i was going to acquire i said, this time i will not remove them, but i guess God only wanted her to have a single dewclaw on her left hind foot and none on her right.......but it's ok if this is s'times happening to Pyrs out there, she definitely looks Purebred; she's a little daintier than my first Pyr, who was like a Polar bear type, but i know i shouldn't be always comparing my current to my last Pyr who passed on.....i guess sometimes it's just natural to do this; but i love her for everything she is:)
