Domestic rabbits

by Arlene
(Boston)

Hi there. We just rescued a 6 year old pyr. He's very sweet . We have 2 rabbits who live in owns (free range occasionally) . He is fascinated by them. Staring and sitting near them always. Occasionally whining and yipping. Is this to be expected, and will it subside? How do we detract the behavior we don't liek?

Thank you!

You’ve only just acquired your dog. Keep him on leash around the rabbits when you are there and praise him for good behaviour. If he starts whining, move him further away.

When you aren’t home, make sure to crate him or at least keep the rabbits separate from him until you know things will be fine. Everything is new for your dog. Give him time to get used to you and the rabbits. It may take a month maybe more or less. Never punish him. To punish him for not getting along with the rabbits will only reinforce that he shouldn’t like the rabbits.

Generally, Pyrs are good with domestic animals but proper introduction is important. Set him up for success.

Here is a great online training program that helps with bonding and teaches you how to work with your dog.

Enjoy your Pyr.
