Exercise

by Mary Hill

I take care of a 4 year old pyr who lives on a hobby farm with sheep and goats. It's basically an estate farm and she doesn't see much action. I am concerned that she doesn't get enough exercise but am cautious about walking her too far from the others. Do you think taking her from the others will compromise her training?

It depends on the dog. If she indicates she is okay leaving them, that is fine. She'll let you know if she doesn't want to leave. You could start by just taking her out for a few minutes if she wants, and increase the time.

No. I think there is debate on it, but in my mind, it won't compromise her training. They don't forget their jobs. It's good for them to see other parts of life providing they do want to leave. That said, one of our adopted dogs will not leave his livestock. He won't come in for his dinner if the sheep don't go in. He would never leave them for for a walk. It's enough exercise to do his job.
