How do we evaluate the investment in food if we choose to feed them on raw?

I don't entirely understand your question, Helena, but I'll go with what I think you're asking.

In my case, feeding raw cut down on vet bills substantially since I got to the root of the problem for itching. She has never been healthier.

I feed 2% of a dog's ultimate body weight. For example, if I have a 100 pound dog, I feed 2lbs a day. Depending on the type of food –– e.g., turkey, beef, rabbit –– the cost will vary. I get premixed from a local organic supplier. If I work out the average cost to $2.50/lb, it costs me $150 a month for one dog.

You can do it cheaper if you buy meat/liver/kidney/bone and other varieties from a local butcher. Here is information on how to feed raw from scratch.

I also have a wholistic vet with whom I consult on my senior dog.
