Highway 281

Three weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon we decided to drive to Red Cloud, Ne to mail a couple of letters. We were sad because we had recently lost our beloved White Lab we had kept for eleven years. While driving to Red Cloud we saw what looked like a charlais calf walking down the middle of the highway. As we got closer we saw it was a huge, white dog full of fleas with matted hair and limping. He looked horrible. I stopped the truck, got out and asked him what he was doing. He walked over to me and bumped his massive head into my leg as if to say “help me.” Now he is our dog and we are learning about Great Pyrenees. He is an angel.

Bath Time

It’s going to be 80 degrees in Kansas on Wednesday and my wife and I want to give Happy a bath. It will be the first time we have bathed him. We bought dog shampoo for him, but I’m open to advice. We’ve never bathed a dog this size before.

Just make sure he is well-groomed before you bathe him so it's easier to blow dry and groom him afterwards.

Four Years Later

Happy has been living with me since January 31, 2021. The last four years have brought changes to my life I did not expect. My wife died on March 4, 2023. I had a hip replacement on August 30, 2022. I now have three, soon to be four great grandchildren. And Happy has gotten older. He was eight years old when I got him. He is 12 years old now. He has arthritis, just like me. He has trouble negotiating stairs, just like me. But he still wanders around the property and barks at coyotes. And these days, he is my very best friend.
