Hot weather

by Kathy Riggs
(Northern Kentucky)

My husband and I are thinking of retiring to Orlando Florida and of course I won't give up my Pyrenees dog. Do Great Pyrenees do good in the Florida heat? Our dog is an inside outside dog. I have never and will never chain up my dog. He goes where I go. He only goes outside to do his business and if I am outside. Thank you for your help.

Sincerely,
Kathy Riggs

Pyrs should never be chained. You are very right in that or any dog. Our rescue dogs only go to homes with secure fencing of at least 6 feet since the majority of Pyrs love to hang outside to watch over their territory. That is their background... to watch over their livestock.

Make sure when he is outside that he has shade and lots of fresh water.

As long as you keep his coat well groomed, and I suspect you do, so the air flow is good, he should be fine. Just keep the walks a little shorter. You can judge your dog the best as to how much he can take in a walk.

Here is information on their coats but, again, I think you already know this stuff.

Enjoy Florida, Kathy!

Florida heat and Pyrenees

Thank you Donna. I was really hoping for someone with more knowledge of Pyrenees to know the answer. He is my first Pyrenees and I'm trying to learn as much as possible. I absolutely love my beautiful boy and I don't want to do anything to possibly hurt him or jeopardize him. Thank you again for your help.

I should have mentioned that they just love to dig into the earth in the summer to stay cool. You can set aside a bit of your garden for him where it's shady.

And, you're welcome
