Hot Weather
by: Donna

It is fine for a Pyr as long as there is shade and dirt in which they can dig to stay cool. Make sure your dog has the option to come in if he wants to if you have air conditioning.

Make sure he has plenty of fresh water, too. This is very important.

Make sure to groom your Pyr weekly to keep the coat from matting. And, nail and dew claws trimmed.

They need their coat as insulation from the cold and heat. NEVER shave your double-coated dog.

its too hot, mama

If you find it hot, your Pyr will find it even more so. Its all manageable especially if you have AC and the dog can come in to rest during the hottest part of the day or, if you have a cool basement or concrete garage floor for him lay on. Above all, do not shave or cut the hair. Have plenty of fresh water always available. As the dog will shed copious amounts of fur, its important for his comfort to keep up the grooming. It may also help to gently spray cool water with a hose just on the dog's belly. A fan stood on the floor moving air over where he's laying down is good too. Ours lays blissfully with his nose about 6 inches from the blowing fan, and will not move for anything much all day. The thing to remember, the hot weather only lasts so long. Just use common sense, stay vigilant for signs he is suffering, act accordingly. You will both weather the weather just fine.
