Nail Trims

Our Pyr is almost 3 yrs old. We've had him since he's 8wks, and is our first Pyrenees although we have had many dogs in the past. He's wonderful in all aspects except for the pedicures. We have massaged his feet and trimmed the nails regularly since he's a pup. This wasn't a struggle until he came home from his neuter at 18 mos. with his nails trimmed very short. We suspect some bled so perhaps there was pain which he did not express in any way. We've tried everything, except sedation (not a chance!)....any ideas or suggestions?

Nail Trims
by: Donna

Go slow.

Have someone hold him with liver treats in hand. Go in with the clippers (or dremmel) and touch his toes. He'll lift them, not liking it. Person continues to give him tiny bits of treats, slowly.

'Good boy!', and leave it for the day.

Next day, do the same thing.

Next day, lift a paw and clip one nail, just a bit while person gives him treats slowly.

'Good boy!', and leave it for the day.

Slowly work your way like this until eventually you can get all nails done.

Nothing happens overnight. Eventually, you'll be able to get all nails done at once.
