Overheating

by Linda

My Great Pyr 8 month old recently started doggy daycare. Does he need timeouts from the other dogs or will he rest when overheating.

Thanks

Time out
by: Donna

That’s a loaded question. Whoever is watching the dogs should be ensuring that playtimes are supervised. Kind of like in children with any breed. There should always be proper introductions. As they play, things will get ‘overheated’ and fights will ensue. Playtime should be ended before that happens. Presumably there will be crates where your dog can rest in quiet.

As an aside, here is a good dog

overheated

And, if by chance your pup's body temp. has
risen to a potentially dangerous level due to prolonged playtime exertions, your day-care should know what to do in that event also. Time out, in both scenarios....a cool wet cloth (not ice) applied to his belly, armpits, inner thighs will also help to bring his body temp. down. Never give ice-cold water to an over-heated dog...offer room temp. water. Place him near a fan to dissipate the heat. As outdoor temps. rise, our Pyrs need to have access to a cool room, a basement, AC, a fan. They are bred to be comfortable in the much colder high mountain pastures of their ancestors.
Any time you observe any breed of dog panic-panting after any prolonged exertion, do not hesitate....begin immediately to help cool him down. It could save his life.
