The Great Pyr has a double coat. The outside layer has long, straight or slightly wavy hair while the undercoat is a soft down which protects these big dogs from water, cold and to some degree, heat. Brushing once or twice a week is all that is required since the dirt falls out of the hair as it dries… these are "self cleaning" dogs.

The undercoat has to be raked to prevent matting from time to time and particularly during the spring and fall as the dog "blows" coat.

In answer, they do two big molts a year and shed all year.

Donna,
Thank you for your comment. I saved a GP about 3 months ago....she is about 4 years old, they think, and just this week she started to REALLY shed alot, like clumps of hair. I was afraid that she might be sick...but she was still eating well and playing when I get home. She passed her vet check and blood panels with flying colors but I was still worried. I will still check with her vet but you have made me feel better about it.

Your dog is fine. This is typical of the breed.

Any research you do, you will find they molt. They lose their undercoat for the hot weather. It then grows back for the winter.
