Simon, 9 year old Great Pyr, and Athena, 8 year old Great Pyr mix, came to live with us last June after many months of excellent care at the KW Humane Society. Simon has difficulty with stairs so he lives on the ground level. He enjoys his new dog bed in the front hall and likes cuddles in the TV room in the evenings. His hind-end deformity does not stop him from walking around his new property, at his own speed. He is able to climb a gentle hill through trees and has gained strength and stamina. Simon chose his favourite spot in the shade of the apple trees for quiet summer naps. When he wanted to cool down, Simon would invite us to follow him to the front door of the house and let him inside to enjoy air-conditioned comfort.
Athena recovered well from her hernia surgery at the KW Humane Society. She was very shy and fearful but gradually bonded with us. Last summer involved constant exposure to family and household noises. When she appeared ready, I began to teach "sit". It was wonderful to see her first success! Athena is eager to learn and now knows "down" and "come". We are currently working on "stay". Athena loves playing with her other dog friend, 5 year old Murphy (son's dog). Life is good.
