Socialization

by Danielle

My Pyr is 11 months old, and she barks at all the neighbors and children. What do I need to do to make her more social?

Barking
by: Donna

Is she barking because she wants to see them?
Is she growling and then barking at them?
Is she close to them when she barks? Is she far away? Is she barking at them off the property? Is she barking at them when they are in your home? Is she aggressive towards them?

Pyrs do bark at things they deem predators such as butterflies two miles way. That's a give and for what they were bred.

Her big socialization and handling should have started the breeders in her first 8 weeks of life. Many different people should have been brought into the house and onto the outside property so she became used to guests coming around.

You might also consider bringing in a positive-reinforcement trainer to show you how to work with her.
