Spay—Optimal time

by Betsey G.

Hello!
I am wondering about the optimal time to spay my Great Pyr. I am seeking to balance hormone health for her development with avoiding an unwanted litter of pups.

Spay

Thank you for being so responsible!

Personally, I would see if you can wait until two years but would do it earlier if needed. If you feel there is a chance of a litter, do it sooner.

Here is some good information to consider more information on this topic .

Hi Donna,
Thank you for responding ... especially with what I wanted to hear, which is to wait if possible.

What is your take on partial-spay?

Modified spay - preserving ovaries
by: Donna

Betsey

I don't know much about it other than what I have read. My dogs are all rescues so come spayed/neutered. As far as I know, there haven't been issues due to spay/neuter even as they age.

It seems to me the less invasive the better. My understanding is the female still comes into heat and attracts males, but she wouldn't get pregnant. That said, you still don't want your girl being bothered even though she may want to be bothered. I read that you don't want trauma to the sex organs.

Here is some more reading for you.
