Training - Stay

We are working to be a therapy dog. Russell does sit and down fairly well but stay for 10 seconds doesn't seem to be a concept he understands. Any thoughts. Today, I worked backwards while he as lounging, I used clicker and hot dog and stood 10 feet away and said "stay" and after 10 seconds, I clicked and rewarded. Any other thoughts?

He's a Pyr. You can only work very short periods with them.

When he lies down, stand right in front of him.

Say 'stay' (or hand signal). Start with 2 seconds. Click. 'Good boy' when he stays.

Work that up to 10 seconds right in front of him.

Then, move a step backwards. And, start again. 2 seconds. Click. 'Good boy'. Work towards 10 seconds.

Take another another step backwards.

You get the idea. However, don't try to do this all in one day. Pyrs get pretty bored as you know.

Working with him as you have done when he is lounging is also a good idea. Perfect. Integrate what he is already doing into training.

I hope this helps.
