One of our purebred Great Pyrenees puppy had one extra toe instead of two. Why? And how is it possible?.. she has had a few litters and they all had the two extra toes

Double dews
by: Donna

If your dogs are purebred then they have registration papers from a recognized kennel club.

You would then know the background of the parental lineage and be able to contact the breeders of them to find out if they have the same issue. You would have signed a breeding contract with them. The single dews would be considered a flaw in the show ring.

If you are breeding unregistered dogs, chances are you do not have full Pyrs. All Pyrs come with double dews. You may have a mix of another big white in there, somewhere along the line, like a Maremma, Akbash or Kuvasz.

As for breeding females, three litters is the max for a dog between the ages of 3 and 7.

You can discuss this issue with any of the other CKC or AKC breeders who can give you more information.
